Clinical Experience
Specialist in Internal medicine with focus on management of diabetes, multiorgan disease and diabetes related complications Since 1983 key object management and prevention of diabetes related complications of the lower extremity. Director of a multidisciplinary foot-care centre with co-ordinated in- and out-hospital facilities and since 1999 process-oriented responsibility both in and out hospital.. The team consists of diabetologist, orthopaedic surgeons (specialised in foot surgery), vascular surgeon, podiatrist , physiotherapist ,casting technician ,orthotist and diabetes educated nurses, and involves and coordination with a total 16 disciplines acting as a referral unit for severe diabetes related complications (ulcers, infection, ischemia, osteoarthropathy, neuropathy)
Clinical research
Author of a substantial number of scientific papers in the field of the diabetic foot , diabetes related complications and wound management The centre has been performing clinical research (7 PhD-thesis published/presented and five ongoing PhD-students)regarding epidemiological studies , risk factors, prognostic factors, outcome and costs of diabetic foot especially foot ulcer and amputation. The team has received international and national recognition for their research and their results has been used in a substantial number of consensus documents Dr Apelqvist has participated, designed and co-ordinated clinical trials in the field of diabetes, peripheral vascular disease wound management since 1983 and is frequently involved in design and evaluation of clinical trials .Since 1990 involved in studies regarding health economics and resource utilisation with regard to wound management.
Senior lecturer
Author of and co-author in textbooks , reviews , systematic reviews state of the art articles) as well as internet based education materials . Frequent lecturer who have been giving more than 500 lectures within and without Scandinavia since 1985. Teacher and faculty member in courses in the basic education and training of students ( medical students , nurses podiatrist , technicians e t c) as well as on post graduate level.
Administration/Organisation of care
Vast experience in organisation of care within and between disciplines . Organised and implemented multidisciplinary teams at two university hospitals with different populations and settings. As well as experience of being acting director for clinics at university level. Involved in projects regarding process or result oriented and care as well as implementation of evidence based medicine .since 1995. Frequently involved as an advisory or member of advisory boards , working groups , consensus groups both on national and international level.
